Everything you need to know about compensation for flight rebookings

  • Rebooking by the airline: If your flight is rebooked by the airline to another flight, another airline, or another airport, your passenger rights under EU regulations remain unchanged.

  • Entitlement to compensation: You are entitled to compensation if you were informed of the rebooking less than 14 days before departure and the flight times change significantly.

  • Amount of compensation: Compensation is based on the flight distance and the amount is £220, £350, or £520, depending on the distance.

  • Accept or reject a replacement flight: You can decide whether to accept or reject the replacement offer or request a refund of your ticket price.

  • Additional costs: If the rebooking incurs additional costs, the airline must usually cover these.

  • Entitlement even if the destination or departure airport changes: If your departure or destination airport changes at short notice, you can request compensation or a refund of transfer costs.

  • Enforce your air passenger rights: Flightright provides reliable support in enforcing your claims quickly and easily in the event of flight rebooking.

When is a flight considered rebooked?

A flight is considered rebooked when the original flight booking is changed to a new date, time, or possibly a new route, resulting in a new flight itinerary. This change can be initiated by the airline (e.g., due to strikes, cancellations, overbooking, or delays) or by the passenger themselves for personal reasons, always in accordance with the airline’s policies and subject to availability.

What are the reasons for rebooking?

There can be many reasons that lead to rebooking. These include personal reasons relating to the traveling passenger, such as illness or unexpected appointments. However, the airline is often also responsible for the need to rebook – whether in the case of flight cancellations or overbooking, where there are more seats than are available on the aircraft. In such cases, you can usually expect compensation, and the experts at Flightright will be happy to help you and explain how you can secure your claim.

What are my rights if my flight is rebooked?

The rights of air passengers in the event of rebooked flights are derived from the UK Air Passenger Rights Regulation. The regulation applies to flights departing from an airport in the UK/EU and to flights landing at an airport in the UK/EU if the operating airline is based in the UK/EU. If the airline rebooks your flight, you can accept the rebooking or request a full refund of the ticket price. If your flight is rebooked to another day at short notice (14 days or less before departure), you may be entitled to compensation.

According to the UK Air Passenger Rights Regulation, the amount of compensation is calculated according to the flight route (distance):

Short distance up to 1500 km

Medium distance up to 3500 km

Long distance of +3500 km

e.g. London – Edinburgh

e.g. London – Athens

e.g. London – Tokyo

£220

£350

£520

In addition, passengers are entitled to care services such as meals, communication facilities, and, if necessary, hotel accommodation if the rebooking causes longer waiting times. Furthermore, if the departure or destination airport changes, the airline must cover the necessary transfer costs.

What is the difference between compensation and a refund if the airline has rebooked my flight?

Is your flight being rebooked to another day up to 14 days before departure? Then you could be entitled to compensation. Compensation is independent of the ticket price and was introduced for consumer protection reasons so that travelers have planning security and airlines do not arbitrarily adjust flight schedules. According to UK regulation 261/2004, the compensation amount for a rebooked flight is £220 to £520. If the airline informed you in good time, more than 14 days before departure, of the date to which your flight was rebooked, you can either take the flight or request a refund of the full purchase price (including taxes and fees). You are not obliged to accept vouchers.

Deadlines for flight rebooking: What deadlines apply?

Naturally, airlines are not allowed to make rebooking as they please. Rather, they must comply with certain deadlines and other conditions. Otherwise, the affected travelers are entitled to compensation under the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation. What deadlines apply to flight rebooking? How many days in advance must I be informed? We have compiled an overview for you.
